How to Be Safe in Baltimore

Overall the main tourist areas in Baltimore are near the waterfront in the Fells Point, Inner Harbor, and Little Italy areas. These places are relatively safe but still use caution if alone and especially at night. Even in the waterfront areas there are many side streets and avoid them late at night. It is also better if you come out of a bar inebriated to take a cab back to where you are staying. There are a lot of panhandlers in these areas but otherwise it is pretty safe. The neighborhoods to avoid are East Monument Street, Park Heights, and Greenmount Avenue in Waverly. Baltimore has a notorious high crime rate but it is mostly in the areas that are in the bad part of town. If you happen to be in an area where there is a pair of tennis shoes tied together and thrown over an electrical wire overhead it means that the neighborhood has drug dealing in it. This only happens in the bad neighborhoods but if you wander into these areas your car may be followed since they do not know you and assume you are there to buy drugs. Just be careful and know where you are at all times and avoid the neighborhoods listed above. « skjul
